The Beginning: Total Ethos
The vision that became Open Door Peace began in 1994 under the name Total Ethos.
It grew from a belief that peace is not only an idea or distant goal. Peace begins in how people recognize, respect, and care for one another in everyday life.
From the beginning, the work placed humanity, dignity, trust, and responsibility at its center.
Community Service
Over the years, the vision became practical community work.
Services and support included:
- Information and referrals.
- Immigration-related community assistance.
- Help understanding government systems.
- Language and cultural support.
- Programs for older adults and families.
- Education, workshops, and practical guidance.
- Support for people experiencing isolation, hardship, or major life changes.
The work often connected people with churches, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, healthcare providers, and community resources.
The Open Door
In 2011, the work continued under the name Open Door.
The name reflected a simple promise: people should have a place where they may enter without shame, explain what they are facing, and find a respectful next step.
The door was not limited to one program or one type of person. It represented welcome, connection, and practical help.
A Pause in Service
The work later slowed when family caregiving and serious illness required full attention.
Although public services became limited, the original vision did not disappear. The manuals, experience, community lessons, and unfinished plans remained.
The need also remained.
People continued to face complicated systems, language barriers, financial pressure, illness, caregiving responsibilities, immigration concerns, and isolation.
Open Door Peace
The work now continues as Open Door Peace.
The word Peace expresses the deeper purpose of the original vision: helping people move through difficult circumstances with greater understanding, dignity, connection, and hope.
Open Door Peace brings the earlier community-service experience into a national online portal that can be available beyond one office, city, or individual schedule.
A New Kind of Resource Center
The Open Door Peace Resource Center organizes practical information for people who may be facing urgent or overwhelming situations.
Visitors may freely explore information about:
- Health and caregiving.
- Public benefits and practical assistance.
- Immigration information.
- Family and community resources.
- Learning and technology.
- Difficult life circumstances.
People who need continuing support may later register for guided DIY or YANA assistance.
Humanity and AI Working Together
A new chapter began when artificial intelligence made it possible to organize, expand, and continue work that had previously depended on one person’s limited time and capacity.
AI supports research, drafting, language access, education, and the organization of public information. Human beings remain responsible for values, judgment, care, and final decisions.
This partnership allows Open Door Peace to preserve its human-centered purpose while preparing communities for a changing world.
The Work Continues
Open Door Peace is built from decades of service, lessons, interruptions, and renewed purpose.
Its history is not finished.
The portal is the next form of the same work: keeping the door open, helping people find their way, and building peace through practical service.
