This page helps you follow the official citizenship application process step by step.

Step 1: View Citizenship Requirements

Most applicants must meet requirements related to:

  • English and civics knowledge.
  • Support for the principles of the United States Constitution.

Step 2: Check Possible Eligibility

Step 3: Gather Your Information

Before beginning, collect information about:

  • Your permanent resident status.
  • Current and previous addresses.
  • Employment and school history.
  • Travel outside the United States.
  • Marriages and former marriages.
  • Children.
  • Taxes.
  • Selective Service registration, when applicable.
  • Arrests, citations, charges, or court matters, when applicable.
  • Organizations or groups listed in the official application questions.

Your USCIS online account is your personal government account.

Do not create a shared family account. Do not give another person your password, verification code, or recovery information.

Each applicant should use their own email address and maintain control of their own account.

Before You Begin

Prepare:

  • An email address that you can open yourself.
  • A telephone or other available method for security verification.
  • A secure password that you do not use for other accounts.
  • A safe place to store recovery or backup information.
  • A personal computer, tablet, or telephone with internet access.

Create the Account

  1. Open the official USCIS online-account website.
  2. Select the option to create an account.
  3. Enter your own email address.
  4. Open the confirmation message sent to that email.
  5. Follow the current USCIS instructions to confirm the email and create secure sign-in credentials.
  6. Complete the required security-verification steps.
  7. Save any recovery or backup information in a secure place.
  8. Sign out and sign in again to confirm that you can access the account.

Protect Your Account

  • Do not share your password.
  • Do not send a password or security code by email or text.
  • Do not allow an untrusted person to control your account.
  • Sign out when using a shared or public computer.
  • Keep your email account secure because USCIS communications may be sent there.
  • Update recovery information when your email address or telephone number changes.

Start and Save Your Application

After signing in:

  1. Locate the option to file an available application online.
  2. Select the citizenship application only when you have independently decided to apply or have received advice from an authorized legal professional.
  3. Read the USCIS instructions before answering.
  4. Enter information carefully.
  5. Save your progress and return later when needed.
  6. Do not submit the application until every answer and document has been reviewed.

Use the Account After Filing

Depending on the case and available USCIS functions, the account may allow you to:

  • View the receipt number and case status.
  • Read USCIS notices.
  • Review case history.
  • Upload requested evidence.
  • Respond to a Request for Evidence.
  • Update your address or contact information.
  • Receive case alerts.
  • Send secure messages.
  • Review appointment information.
  • Track later actions and decisions.

Continue checking both your online account and your regular mail. Do not assume that every important communication will appear in only one place.

Get Technical Help

When you cannot create or access the account, reset a password, obtain an online access code, upload a document, or make an online payment, use the official USCIS technical-support process.

Step 5: Complete the Application

Read every question carefully.

Answer truthfully and completely. Do not guess, hide information, or copy another person’s answers.

Save your work as you proceed. Review names, dates, addresses, travel history, and other information before submitting.

Step 6: Review the Fee and Payment Options

Check the current filing fee directly through USCIS before submitting.

Some applicants may qualify for a reduced fee or fee waiver. Eligibility requirements and submission procedures can change, so use the current official USCIS instructions.

Step 7: Submit and Save a Complete Copy

Before submitting:

  • Review every answer.
  • Confirm that required documents are included.
  • Confirm the correct payment or approved fee request.
  • Save or print a complete copy of the application and supporting documents.
  • Save the submission confirmation and receipt information.

Step 8: Track USCIS Notices

USCIS may send notices concerning:

  • Receipt of the application.
  • Biometric services.
  • Requests for additional evidence.
  • The interview.
  • A decision.
  • The Oath of Allegiance ceremony.

Read every notice completely and respond by the stated deadline.

Step 9: Prepare for the Interview and Test

During the interview, a USCIS officer may review your application and ask questions about your background.

Most applicants must also complete English and civics testing unless an exception or accommodation applies.

Step 10: Attend the Oath Ceremony

An approved applicant does not become a United States citizen until completing the required Oath of Allegiance.

Follow the instructions in the ceremony notice and bring the requested documents.

When to Seek Authorized Legal Help

Consider consulting a licensed immigration attorney or an authorized accredited representative before filing when you have concerns involving:

  • Arrests, charges, convictions, or court records.
  • Long or frequent trips outside the United States.
  • Possible abandonment of permanent residence.
  • Unpaid taxes or failure to file required tax returns.

  • Selective Service registration.
  • Prior immigration applications containing incorrect information.
